Hey, Jones! I’m sure we’re all aware that sometimes the servery food doesn’t hit quite like you want it to. If you, like me, are looking for exciting new ways to spruce up our fine dining, keep reading! I have compiled a list of the best hacks to take our servery food to that next level!

  1. Peanut butter on lunch cookies

This one may have you cocking your head, but don’t knock it until you try it! Grab a cookie of your choosing and a cup of peanut butter, and either dip or spread the peanut butter on the cookies. This sweet and salty combo is a great way to end a meal.

2. Soy sauce on fried rice

Need a little extra flavor on that rice? Hit it up with some soy sauce! The added sodium should help bring out any subtle flavors that were hidden in the rice.

3. Hot sauce/Siracha on literally EVERYTHING

If you are a fan of spicy things, I highly recommend this hack for you. Invest in a nice bottle of hot sauce or sriracha, and I promise your life will be changed. Put it on breakfast, lunch, dinner, rice, meat, “oomph,” literally anything you can think of. It will bring a nice heat and flavor to whatever food you think needs an extra kick.

4. Breakfast sandwich using a croissant

Grab a croissant, then get some eggs and your choice of meat (or fake meat), and voila! Homemade breakfast sandwich achieved! Optional: invest in cheese slices to go on top.

5. Parfait; Yogurt, granola, and fruit

This is sort of an easy one, as it is usually all laid out for you in the servery this way. If you haven’t thought of it, though, try grabbing a cup of yogurt, granola, and fruit for breakfast! Groggy due to the quintessential Rice student lack of sleep, nothing hits better than that sweet and crunchy goodness before that 8 am. The sweetness of the granola cuts the sourness of the yogurt, and the nice tartness of the fruit (I normally get the blueberries) brings it all together in a symphony of deliciousness.

6. Add some seasoning

Flavor is the name of the game here. Whatever you can think of to add flavor will be your best bet. When in doubt, season! I have found that even just a dash of salt and pepper crank the food to the next level 9 times out of 10.

And there we have it! These are just a few ways we on the Kitchen Committee like to get creative with our servery food. However, the possibilities are endless! Don’t be afraid to try wacky combinations. You never know, it just might work!
